“Climate change” two words that are all over the news nowadays. Demonstrations for a change in European cities are every Friday and yet we still seem far from where we should be regarding protecting our nature and our planet. The only place we have and we use it as if the resources are never going to run out.
Sagres is a calm city, there are some bars where you can go dancing or you can just hangout but I would say it’s one of the most original little towns you find in the south. There are no skyscrapers, no big buildings, no fast fashion shops. It’s just a chilled town to surf. And we try to blend in with nature as much as we can even though we offer a home to tourists. We have solar panels on our roof right above the dorms. If you look from the bar you can see them. The panels are heating the water for the shower. As you may notice when you shower you have limited time and it’s not much money. This is also because in an average home, showers are typically the third largest water use after toilets and clothes washers. The average shower uses 65.1 liters and lasts for 8.2 minutes. If you think about how many people can stay in our hostel and how many are gonna take a shower after they went to the beach you’ll notice that it’s way too much water that is used. So we limited the time for showering. But the limit is also for everyone to have warm water regarding the fact that they have to get heated up by the solar panels.
In the winter time the current won by the panels are also used for heating up the floor in the apartments. If there’s a lot of sun the spare energy even goes to the pool and keeps it warm. So on a windy but sunny day where at the beach it’d be cold you can chill by the pool and enjoy live. We also have LED lights all over the hostel with sensor installed. Like this you never have to think about turning off the light and there’s no risk of letting it on the whole night. In the common room we divide trash so if you have glass bottles or anything please divide them and don’t just throw them in the common trash. For example recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as it takes to burn it. So the next time you leave the garbage at the beach or you throw it in a normal trash can, think about this. Have a wonderful week and don’t forget to pick up trash if you see it, even if it’s not yours. Do some good.
