​ Is Sagres good for surfing in the winter?​

Absolutely. Winter delivers the most consistent, high-quality swells of the year to the Algarve. Thanks to Sagres’ unique dual-coast geography, you can always find a sheltered spot with clean, offshore conditions when the west coast gets too heavy. Because we hold the highest-tier surf school license in the region, our reach isn’t restricted to just one or two spots. We have access to a massive geographical area spanning both the south and west coasts. This gives our experienced instructors the unique flexibility to easily switch beaches every day, matching the absolute best wind, tide, and wave conditions to your exact experience level.Our in-house surf school, Sandy Surf School, remains open all year around, providing surf lessons and premium gear rentals throughout the low season.

Do you offer weekly or monthly rates for long-term stays?

Yes! We hold the highest-tier surf school license in the Algarve. Our premium license grants us permissionto conduct surf lessons across a vast selection of beaches in Sagres and along the west coast. Thismeans our instructors can track down the absolute best wind, tide, and wave conditions for your specificskill level every single day!

Which west coast surf beaches are nearby?​

We are just a short drive from some of the most consistent surf spots in Europe. Beliche is a tucked-awaygem shielded from northern winds, offering fast, hollow waves. Further up the wild west coast, you’ll findCordoama and Castelejo with high-consistency beach break that works almost year-round, deliveringexcellent peaks for all surf levels amidst breathtaking natural scenery. At Sagres Sun Stay, we also providea beach transfer service to some beaches, so you don’t have to worry about renting a car. We’ll load upthe gear and drive you straight to the best breaks on the coast!

What are the best surf beaches within walking distance?​

The best beaches for surfing within walking distance of our hostel are beach Tonel and Mareta beach. Youcan be standing on the sand at either spot in under 15 minutes. Tonel is famous for its consistent beachbreak and stunning cliff backdrop, making it a favorite for intermediate and advanced surfers. Maretaoffers a more sheltered, south-facing bay, which provides gentle, clean lines, perfect for beginners orwhen massive winter swells max out the west coast.

Is the hostel suitable for solo travelers?​

We are a very social hostel. Between our group surf lessons, communal dinners, cowork space, and restaurant bar, it’s the easiest place in Sagres to meet people while traveling solo.

How fast is the Wi-Fi at Sagres Sun Stay for remote work?

Can I use the surf equipment provided during the lessons outside the surf lessons?

Surfing equipment is only provided during the surf lessons, but you can always rent a board and wetsuit outside the lessons if you want to practice on your own. Please ask at our reception for surf equipment rentals.

Do I have to be a guest at the hostel to rent equipment (or to book surf lessons)?

No, everyone can rent bikes, skateboards, surf equipment, etc. even if you are not a guest of the hostel. The same with surf lessons, everyone is more than welcome!

Can I book surf lessons for big groups? (schools, companies, associations, families…)

Yes of course! You can book surf lessons for large groups by contacting us directly so that we can plan them in advance.

Do I need to book in advance?

Our surf lessons are taught in small groups, so we recommend you to book in advance to make sure we have space available for the dates you request.

What should I bring to the surf lessons?

Don’t forget to bring a towel, sun cream, your swimming costume and the best version of yourself to enjoy the experience! The lunchbox is included in our surf lessons, and consists of a sandwich, a piece of fruit and water.

In which language are the lessons taught?

Our surf lessons are taught in English.

How do your group surf lessons work? (time and place)

Location: our van will pick you up at the hostel and the instructor will choose the best surf spot for the day. Our surf lessons take place on one of the stunning beaches of the Algarve Natural Park.

Timetable: the timetable of our lessons may vary each day, depending on the weather, tides and number of participants, but we usually offer lessons in the morning and in the afternoon.

Are there any age restrictions for attending surf lessons?

To attend our surf lessons, the minimum age is 8 years old. Between the ages of 8 and 10, the child needs to be supervised by a parent or legal tutor. There is no maximum age to attend our surf lessons, we have already had a 67 year old student!

We don’t have exclusive groups for children, but we always try to get them together.

What levels are available for surf lessons? How do I know what my surfing level is?

We offer surf lessons for beginners and intermediate surfers.

Beginner: You have never surfed before or have only surfed up to 30 days in your life and can catch a broken wave and stand up in the whitewash.

Intermediate: You have more confidence in the take-off, you are starting to turn and can paddle alone in moderate conditions.

What are your cancellation policies?

In case of packages: we refund 100% of the total amount of your stay, when the cancellation is made up to 7 days before your arrival date. We refund 50% of the total amount of your stay, when the cancellation is made within 7 days before your arrival date.

In case of accommodation only: we refund 100% of the total amount of your stay, when the cancellation is made up to 4 days before your arrival date.

We do not refund in case of a “no-show”.

Can I change my reservation after I booked?

Let us know as soon as possible if you want to change the dates of your stay or your package and we will do our best to accommodate you.

What types of payment do you accept?

We accept debit/credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, among others), cash or Bank Transfer. We don’t accept American Express and pay checks.

Where is the hostel located?

We are located in Sagres, a small village in the Algarve known for being a great surf spot all year round and its stunning landscapes. Our hostel is located 3 min walk from the supermarket and 15 min walk from the nearest beaches and the centre of our village.

Can I book an airport transfer with you?

Sorry, we don’t offer this service.

How can I reach Sagres Sun Stay Hostel & Surf Camp?

From Lisbon (LIS Airport)

Public transport:

  • By Bus (Direct & Best Value): From Lisbon Airport, take the Red Line Metro to São Sebastião, then switch to the Blue Line (Direction: Reboleira) and get off at Jardim Zoológico. Walk to the Sete Rios Bus Station.
  • Direct Bus: Catch a direct Rede Expressos bus to Sagres (approx. 3.5 – 4 hours).
  • Tip: Booking your ticket online at Rede Expressos in advance is often cheaper and ensures a seat.​​

Private transport:

  • By Car: Take the A2 expressway south and then the A22 west. It’s a scenic 3-hour drive (325 km).

From Faro (FAO Airport)

Public transport:

  • By Bus: Take bus 14 or 16 from the airport to Faro Bus Terminal. From there, you have two options:
    Vamus Algarve: Take the bus to Lagos, then transfer to the Sagres line.
    Aerobus (Seasonal): Check for the direct Vamus Aerobus which runs during the summer months.
  • By Bus and Train: Take a bus or taxi from the airport to Faro Train Station. Take the regional train to Lagos (1.5 hours). From Lagos station, it’s a short walk to the bus terminal, catch the bus (Vamus or Rede Expressos). Get off at the Sítio do Poço stop, it’s the closest to our front door!

 Public transport:

  • By Car: Take the N125-4 out of the airport, connect to the A22 expressway heading west, and follow the N125 straight into Sagres. It’s an easy, straightforward 1.5-hour drive (116 km). Use the Via Verde electronic toll system for a smoother trip.
  • By Transfers: Private airport transfers can be pre-booked directly, taking about 1.5 hours. Rideshare apps like Uber and Bolt operate widely across the Algarve, with fares starting at €70 depending on seasonal demand.

Do you have gluten free options at breakfast?

In our breakfast buffet we offer some gluten free options (fresh fruits, vegetables, etc.), but we don’t have gluten free bread. However, if you would feel more comfortable bringing your own gluten-free items to breakfast, please feel free to do so.

Can I use the kitchen to cook my own meals?

Yes of course! We have a common kitchen where you can prepare your delicious meals and socialize with the other guests.

What kind of food is served at breakfast? And at dinner?

Our breakfast is a healthy buffet with fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, coffee, juices, yogurt, cereals, etc. In our restaurant we offer for dinner a range of local and international dishes, as well as vegetarian and vegan options.

If I book a surf + accommodation package, can I start at any day of the week?

Of course, we are flexible so you can choose the dates that suit you the most to start your Surf & Sleep package.

When travelling with friends, can we stay together in the same room?

For bookings of 2 or more beds, we cannot guarantee that these will be in the same dorm, but we will do our best to try to help you. We kindly recommend that you inform our reception upon your arrival about your specific request.

Are the bed linen and towels provided?

The bed linens are provided for everyone (pillow, sheets and blanket). Towels are provided in the private rooms. However, the towels are not provided in the dorms.

What are the Check-In and Check-Out times?

Check-In is from 4pm on, and Check-Out is before 11am. If you need to Check-In later, please contact our team.

Can I park my car at the hostel?

Indoors we have a parking lot available, but we do not make reservations in advance. It works with the system “first comes, first served”. However, there are free street parking spots available in the area, very close to the hostel.

Is there a curfew?

There is no curfew, however we ask you to pay attention to the noise between 11pm and 8am so that everyone can rest peacefully. Don’t forget to check our rules before arriving!

Is it allowed to smoke?

You are allowed to smoke outside the hostel, in the common areas. You cannot smoke inside the facilities/buildings.

Are pets allowed in the hostel?

We love animals, but to maintain a comfortable and accommodating environment for all our guests, we cannot accept your furry friend at the hostel. However, assistance dogs are welcome.

Is there a minimum age to stay at the hostel?

Parental or guardian supervision is required if you are under 18 years of age to stay at the hostel. Minors under the age of 18 need to stay in the private rooms (except for minors who are part of a supervised school group who can also stay in the dormitories).
